Hanging, folding, hooks & bins. When it comes to clothing organization it seems everyone has their own opinion, so how do you decide what's right for you? I've got your back, keep reading to discover the process I use with my clients.
Like most things in my life I like to start with a question: What are you trying to accomplish with your clothes/closet?
“ This seems like an obvious, and thus unnecessary question to many at face value. Here's why it matters..."
This seems like an obvious, and thus unnecessary question to many at face value. Here's why it matters...
Are you trying to teach your kids how to fold their clothes?
Are you trying to protect delicate clothing?
Are you trying to make it easy to put laundry away?
Are you wanting your closet to feel like your own little boutique?
Each of these questions could be the answer to what you are trying to accomplish with your clothes/closet. And each question will give you a different answer.
Great. Then let's make sure they are easy for them to access, and that fit all their clothes when folded.
Great. Then let's make sure we have enough hangers so they don't get wrinkled.
Great. Then let's get a bin for each category of clothing (shirt, pants, undergarments, etc.) and you can quickly toss them in.
Great. Then let's make sure we have nice bins, matching hangers, and use things like wall space for jewelry and hats.
In the first scenario the answer was a drawer.
In the second scenario the answer was hangers.
In the third scenario the answer was bins.
In the fourth scenario the answer was a combination.
I don't believe in one right answer. I believe in focusing on principles and using them to build your life best for you. The principle here is: Have a system for storing your clothes makes it easier to manage and use them.
If you're doing that, you're doing it right!
What do you prefer to use when it comes to clothes organization?
Quick Start Tip: Take a look at how each person's clothes are being stored. Are they stored that way because that's simply "how you do it"? Have you ever stopped to ask if this is actually working? Is it helping you keep clothes off the floor? Can you tell which are clean and which are dirty without smelling or inspecting? If not, take a moment to think about what might be a better way. And let go of any "shoulds" you're feeling about how to organize clothes.
(Hint: Your 7 year old doesn't have to fold her clothes. Perhaps it's better to teach her responsibility for them and have her just toss them in a bin, than fight and end up doing it yourself in an effort to have a perfectly kept and folded drawer...)
Remember, the right way to store and organize your clothes, is the way that helps you achieve your desired outcome. You can't do that unless you know what you want!
